Why do you need the Open Shell program?
The Open Shell program is designed to be installed in the Start menu system with a classic user interface. All versions of Windows operating systems released after XP are supported – Vista,7,8,8.1,10 and 11 (32-bit/64-bit).
However, the utility does not replace the existing Start menu – it can still be called. The Open Shell program adds another menu to the Explorer and intercepts both the pressing of the Win key and the mouse click on the Start icon. As a result, the call of the existing menu is blocked, and instead of it,the classic Start is displayed on the screen. To call the “current” menu, the key combination “Shift + Win” or a mouse click on the Start icon with the “Shift” key pressed is used by default. But all this can be changed in the program settings.
Open Shell Program Functions
Most of the program’s functions are related to the design of the user interface of the Start menu. And it’s not just about the design, but also about the menu elements that the user can add, delete, rename, and swap with each other. Here are some of the key features of the Open Shell program for customizing Start:
- There are 3 variations of the Start menu:classic, classic two-column,and another Windows 7-style option.
- The ability to select a cover, which determines the graphic design of the Start button of the selected type (you can turn on/off transparency, select a color for the background and elements,increase/decrease the size of icons,etc.).
- Manually set the overall width of the Start menu,as well as the width of the Programs and Go to columns (if you are using a two-column Start menu).
- Adding new items to the Start menu that can act as links (for example, opening a folder when clicked) or a submenu,in which files and directories (including subdirectories) stored in the folder to which the submenu refers will be used as items. It is possible to set separators between Start menu items,as well as drag the latter with the mouse to change their location in the structure.
- Ability to customize the Start menu search field:enable/disable the option to track launched programs, and the auto-completion function, select locations on the disk in which the search will be performed, and more.
- The ability to replace the Start menu button with one of the suggested ones or your own version (you can upload an image – an icon – into the program).
- Fine-tune animation, scrolling, shadows, transparency, and a range of other graphical settings for the Start menu.
- Customizing the behavior of the Start menu:setting the delay time for the menu to appear, displaying tips,etc.,enabling/disabling automatic opening of submenus and many other technical parameters.
- Ability to customize the graphical component of the Taskbar:transparency, background and text color, texture (if selected as the background for the Taskbar).
- Ability to enable/disable the context menu when right-clicking on the Start icon.
- Setting up the sound of mouse clicks depending on what exactly was selected by the user – a link,a submenu, etc.
Russification of the Open Shell program
In the Open Shell program settings (the “Language” section in the English version),there is an option to select the Russian language, but when it is activated, nothing happens. To Russify the application, you need to copy/move the “ru-RU.dll” file (present in the archive with the program) to the Open Shell installation folder. By default,it is located here:
C:\ Program Files\ Open- Shell
Once you have done this, restart the program and select Russian in the “Language” section again. For clarity, see the screenshots of the application on the page.
